I knew that this was going to be a great game but I never expected it to be filled with controversy nor did I expect it to end the way it did! But thats sports for you! Mexico played an excellent first half as they settled into the game better than Netherlands and kept on creating chances but they werent able to convert any of them and at the end of the first half, the score was 0-0. But just 3 minutes into the second half, a badly cleared ball by Netherlands landed on Giovani Dos Santos feet and his control and strike putting that ball behind the net was glorious as he put Mexico ahead! The problem with a 1-0 score against Netherlands is that its never good enough and Mexico should have pressed harder to increase that lead. This became evident as the game momentum shifted and Netherlands started creating more chances with plenty of strikes into the goal that were so brilliantly stopped by the amazing goalkeeping skills of the Mexican goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa. He kept on making amazing save after amazing save and it was clearly frustrating for Netherlands as they managed to get past the defense but just couldnt find anyway of getting a ball past him. A controversial call on Robben being brought down in the penalty box by two mexican players that should have been a penalty was not awarded but that would have evened the score. The moment Netherlands made a substitution and brought on Memphis Depay, the loopholes started showing up for Netherlands as he made a strike off a corner kick that hit the post and that was Mexicos saving grace on that occasion! Their chance came when a deflection off a header from a corner kick landed in front of Wesley Sneijder whose instant reaction and strike sent the ball flying like a bullet into the back of the net and Ochoa did not stand a chance of even touching it! That leveled the game 2 minutes to the end of scheduled time as 6 minutes of extra time was added to it! In the 94th minute, a controversial foul was called on Andres Guardado for bringing Arjen Robben down in the penalty box and a penalty was given against Mexico which was easily knocked in by Klaas Jan Huntelaar helping Netherlands win the match and knocking Mexico out of the competition! I believe that late penalty as controversial as it was, was karma for the first one that was wrongly not given when it clearly should have been a penalty! A tough call for Mexico as they played so well but it showed us that the Dutch still have the ability of pulling themselves out of a bad situation as they were only 2 minutes away from being knocked out before they equalized the game! I also believe that the Dutch should not have benched but started Depay although bringing him in later still worked out in the end! Its a pity that Mexico was knocked out because they are the team that most found difficult to contend with in this World Cup!
