I know 2014 has been good to many people, and for you all, Im very happy. I, however would really like this year to be over, and hope and pray, that 2015 is better, even if only marginally. It has been a very bad year for many different reasons. Today, I had to say goodbye to not only one but two of my animals. One was our chicken, Red, who was egg bound and when I picked her up to check her out, she died in my arms. Not pleasant, especially since these girls give us eggs. I hate that I couldnt do anything else for her. The other one is very special to me. I got her my second semester of vet school, because she was old and dog-aggressive. I took her in on Valentines Day 2008, not sure what to expect. What I got was the most human loving companion you could ever ask for. She was great with kittens (loved Cathys kitten, even when he chewed on her tail), loved babies (DAnn, somewhere there is a cute picture of Calvin with Daisy on the porch), and was actually really good with dogs ( after a little introduction, right Dana and Amanda? ) Oh well, the Schools loss was my gain. Daisy was the best thing that happened to me in vet school. She kept me from stressing out, worse than I already was. When people would refer to grandma it was hard to tell if they were talking about me or Daisy, but she would hang in there with all the younger dogs. She made it to Iowa and even survived abrupt temperature changes from 90F to -30F all within 2 weeks. When we got back to NC, it was evident that she was the matriarch of our little pack. If she wasnt happy, nobody was. There is no way I can thank her for everything she did for me. Last year I found masses on her spleen, but at the age of 15 then, I was going to my best to keep her comfortable. Finally, at the age of 16, she became uncomfortable. She had slowly been going down hill, but I was in denial. Today, when I came home, she gave me the look. And after everything she has done for me, this was the nicest thing I could do for her. It is going to be unbelievably difficult in our house for awhile, but I know that Daisy is not hurting anymore. Sorry for the long post, but I needed to say goodbye to her.
