I know I have friends who like and respect Deepak Chopra and his work and approach. I myself acknowledge that he sometimes has worthy things to say, however, the more Ive listened to him speak and read his work, the more Ive found his pseudo profound babbling for what it is- quackery. What I find most frustrating- and I dont think Dawkins referred to it enough in the discussion- is his persistent tendency to align his spirituality with the God of the gaps approach of religion and theologians down the ages. For those unaware; God of the gaps is a perspective in Theology where gaps in scientific knowledge are considered as evidence or proof of Gods existence. Replace Theologys God with Chopras version of spirituality and there would be no fundamental difference. Both approaches totally misunderstand Science and embody a defeatist attitude to the understanding of the universe by constructing an elaborate and all consuming explanation of ultimate reality based on no empirical observation or evidence. If Chopra was consistent in his conviction that we are all conditioned by society, family, institutions etc and we cant create or discover a coherent picture of reality because we are all observers, and our observations and our consciousness distort, obscure and create reality, then he should just shut up and leave it to the rest of us conditioned and programmed robots to make our own bumbling conclusions. It reminds me of a criticism of the post-modern assertion that there is no truth, only interpretations. If one asserts without qualification that there is no truth then one has asserted a truth and thereby has accepted the idea of truth.
