I know I talk about my boys a lot, Whl, Tuffy and Blizz. Whl and Tuffy are both retired thoroughbreds That came up from Maryland, through the TPR. Which if you want to adopt a retired race horse these people are excellent to work with. I thought horses with their pedigrees were all born into a life of luxery, would run races, retire and continue to live in luxery. I didnt realize that a lot of these horses ended up at the slaughter houses. (Naïve?) Ok I adopted 2 retired race horses, thinking these boys ran the fair circuit and it never occurred to me until the day they were on their way up to look up their pedigrees. After all they werent going to race again, and they were gelded so the pedigree didnt mean much there. I laugh now at the night they arrived but at the time it wasnt funny. I made the mistake of looking up the pedigrees, both of these horses have bloodlines I would give my right arm just to pet one not alone have one in my field and I have 2. I was a total basket case. The transport arrived, Whl comes off like he has not a care in the world, head up and ears forward just like he belonged here and was coming home. Went in the fence and proceeded to graze. Next Tuffy comes off, he is dancing a little sideways and bobbing his head, he wasnt being bad just ancy, not sure of his surroundings or the people. They opened the gate and I put him in with Old Sugar Baby, which is the best thing I could have done. Tuff was petrified and he had not a clue what was going on. He started running back and forth, Sugar just calmly let him run and kept grazing. Thank God for Linda his trainer, I called her. She explained he will calm down and he would be fine. He hadnt been turned loose before in a field since he was little, this was a whole new world for him. 24 hours later he wasnt running and within 48 hours he had fallen in love with my daughter Skye. Sugar played nurse made and teacher. It actually took me longer to settle down than the horse. I didnt sleep much that first week, I kept checking to make sure they were ok. I almost brought them in the house the first time it rained, the barn wasnt quite done and I didnt want them to get wet. Like I said its funny now but that first week it wasnt. They didnt shrink up into minatures, so it was all good. Their papers, dont mean a lot, but their love does. Its their morning neighs that resound through the hollow, its their gentle nuzzles. Yes I have been truly blessed. We lost Sugar and we got Blizz. Life is good.
