I know Im in an exhausted haze and should probably not be saying things like this publicly, where I might have to follow through on it, but I wonder if theres not a need out there for animal-loving priests to serve as chaplains to those who are having their pets euthanized. I blessed a few dogs today with serious illnesses, and it did not feel so different than praying for healing for a person who is ill. Yesterday I was asked to do a special hands-on blessing for a dog who was failing, and apparently she died not too long after I left. I would happily have crawled into her apartment and stayed with her for those last few hours, had I known. Perhaps more importantly, I would be happy to minister to the vets and owners who go through such grief in those last moments. The one time we had to have a dog put to sleep our vet was absolutely amazing, just a beautiful sweet presence and such a comfort. But maybe in some cases a priest would be a help. Just thinking...
