I know Ive posted this before, but I came across it again tonight. Aside from my fathers love of the game, this video reel (of my high schools football team) is an excellent example of why I love sports. It also reminds me of a piece I wrote as the editor of my high school newspaper that spoke on our athletic program and the glaring need to overcome socioeconomic issues to give talented student athletes a better chance at a brighter future. At the time that I wrote the story, I remember getting an impressive amount of responses from educational administrators and other faculty in the State. While I dont know that any programs have been developed to help foster the obvious need in my hometown, I can only hope that one day, there will be some initiative to provide student athletes, especially those as talented as in this highlight reel, the opportunity to have the support that they need to circumvent any socioeconomic hardships, develop themselves academically and prepare them for real life challenges they may face after leaving high school in pursuit of a professional athletic or college career. Coming from my hometown and having now known a few professional athletes on a close, personal level, I can wholly understand the several challenges that the Youth from my hometown can and will face. I still believe it is the duty of the faculty and administration to identify those that have both potential and aptitude and not only provide student support, but also intervene where necessary to ensure a brighter future. I feel even more compelled and more passionate about this cause as I now work in the Communications and Marketing Department at a National Non-Profit Organization whose purpose is to support the development of educational institutions across the nation and the world. If I had the time and opportunity, the development of my own 501c(3) with the purpose of identifying and supporting talented youth athletes might be viable. That being said, Im still young and an idea like that, may not be a half bad one.
