I know Umno is not exactly the darling of the chinese press in - TopicsExpress

I know Umno is not exactly the darling of the chinese press in Malaysia at the moment (hahaha). And the feeling is, I guess, mutual. Oh well... I suppose current political dynamics are not conducive for that. I am sure it will get better. But because this is UMNO General Assembly, UMNO is invariably the flavour of the month. Let me be frank. I personally sometimes feel intimidated by the chinese press coverage. Dont get me wrong. It is not because of what they report but the fact that I cant read what they report. That feeling is really discomforting (time to learn chinese, maybe). But heres the thing about me. I cherish and will defend freedom of press. It is an important component of democracy and good governance. The check and balance they provide is invaluable to ensure those in high office do not misuse their power. If I am asked what I think the press in Malaysia should do to be a better and more effective 4th estate of the nation, I would say two things. One, please send genuinely interested reporter who understands and passionate about the subject matter they are asked to cover. And two, as much as possible, seek comment, clarification or rebuttal from those being reported before the story is printed. If not, damage is done before the aggrieved can redeem himself. I have many friends among reporters including chinese reporters who are working closely and tirelessly with me and my ministry. They are hard working Malaysians with an overwhelming objective to make our nation the best it can be. I thank them for being inquisitive and probing (even though I must admit that at times the questions can be irritatingly pesky) for that makes me and my ministry more aware of our weaknesses and put us on our feet all the time to serve the rakyat. #media_appreciation
