I know films require a suspension of disbelief in the name of fiction but seriously: This E.T. The Extraterrestrial 1) the U.S. government would have been aware of E.T.s presence 30 minutes before the movie even began 2) Elliot and Gertie would have been shot on sight due to withholding privileged information from government entities 3) Elliots mom and older brother would have more than likely been taken to the Dulce base or Area 51 for interrogation and then held captive for further experimentation 4) E.T. due to his obviously lacking physical attributes would have easily been caught and lobotomized and probably tortured for advanced alien technology. Summary (the way E.T. should have happened) E.T. is walking out of the shed while Elliot is sleeping outside, Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones are behind him, they shoot Elliot, they shoot Gertie, they take E.T. against his will, roll credits.
