I know its lengthy but it needed to be said. Ok so I was reading some comments on a recent post as saw that a lot of people who commented (including me) said that Avril changed Chads writing style. Most of those people (excluding me) saw it did a complete 180°. Heres the thing. Every album from Silver Side Up and on that Nickelback has put out has had a ton of diversity in writing style. Obviously she changed his writing style. In an interview with Howard Stern, they both said that the other has had a major impact on their styles. They said that they spend the majority of their time writing music. I feel people are looking to far into it. Yes there is a different writing style in What Are You Waiting For. However, its closer to Trying Not To Love You or even Lullaby as opposed to When We Stand Together or anywhere of their leading pop singles. Avril had an impact but obviously Chad isnt going to write more pop than before. Like with every album they lead with a rock single (Edge of a Revolution, Something In Your Mouth, Animals, Figured You Out, Too Bad.) and a pop single (What Are You Waiting For, When We Stand Together, Gotta Be Somebody, Photograph, Someday, How You Remind Me.) I say How Yo Remind Me because while all three singles from SSU are rock/heavy rock, How You Remind Me is the most pop (POPular) of them. The later songs in the rock releases are heavier (Edge and Something seems heavier than Animals and Too Bad.) whereas the pop singles are lighter. (Waiting For and Stand Together is lighter than Remind Me and Someday.) Nickelback is adapting. They span the entire rock spectrum and are pushing boundaries. This song is getting controversy from us because its different from the other lead pop singles. You want to know why? BECAUSE IT SOUNDS DIFFERENT. IT SOUNDS MORE POP AND PEOPLE DONT LIKE IT. PEOPLE LIKE NB AS SOLELY MORE ROCK THAN ANY. Im not yelling. Im emphasizing the point. Thats why I got into this band in the first place. Hes her and Curb have a grungy feel to them. The State is the heavier rock Silver Side Up is lighter than The State but its still hard rock. Thats what brought them up. In 2000 people didnt want to hear metal they wanted rock. How You Remind me is considered pop because its more popular than the rest of the album. It caught on and, as an American, it was a way people could connect to the pain and suffering expressed through the song due to the timing of release, July 28, 2001. The Long Road went a mix if directions. Some of it was the lighter rock, Someday, some is considered metal, Flat On The Floor and Because of You. It spans the spectrum. As does All The Right Reasons, photograph is easily considered pop along with If Everyone Cared and Rockstar (Both have a rock feel, still considered pop.) and Far Away. Animals, Next Contestant and Someone That Youre With are the lighter rock. Side of A Bullet, Fight For All The Wrong Reasons, Follow You Home, they all have that heavy rock almost metal feel. Dark Horse, DARK HORSE IS A MESS OF THE SPECTRUM. Im just going to go through the full list. SIYM- lighter side of heavy rock BITTG- heavy rock close metal GBS- pop/rock closer to rock ICFY- pop. Flat out NGR- generally metal JTGH- mid heavy rock NGBE- more pop/rock feel SH- heavier rock. S.E.X.- same as BITTG more rock though ITWYLD- pop/rock more pop TA- most people say country rock. I feel rock with the laid back country feel. I dont think it qualifies as country. Here and Now is as bad as Dark Horse. TMW- lighter metal BU- flat out rock WWST- pop, rock feel MQ- straight up hard rock GGMS- heavier rock Lullaby- makes-you-cry pop KIG- rock with metal feel TNTLY- pop touch of rock HOTH- pop touch of rock EIWD- rock with a touch of metal DELIE- pop with touch of rock Who are we to say the this album is going to NOT have this diversity. Someone mentioned that the band had an essence. THIS IS IT. This song just goes to show, when compared to Edge, that lithe album will have this diversity. Granted Stand Together wasnt like this but this song is closer to Holding On or Trying. It seems to pop to be NB and thats what most seem to have an issue with. NB can write pop. They can write rock, metal. The writing styles change. Every artist at one point or another played with their writing style. This is when Chad did his alteration. Chad can write every genre. Look at all of NB. He has written country, Its a Business Doing Please With You by Tim McGraw. He has written rap, Tomorrow In A Bottle by Timberland. Ill go so far as to say metal as well, It Wont Suck Itself by Steel Panther. Chad has dabbled in all genres. Hes covered his fingers with ink of all colors. Chad has even said, in an interview, that he will never e a master of anything. That he will continue to pick up stupid little tips and tricks on playing guitar and writing. Writing styles change and everyone needs to stop being butt-hurt over this. Diversity is what makes Nickelback, Nickelback. No one can 100% classify Nickelback into a specific genre because they are all over the place.
