I know its not No Gender December anymore but after a month of trying to look at gender issues objectively I saw this and thought its a really good example of inequality. At a second hand store this morning I found this vinyl inspirational saying that you rub onto your wall. I love the message and the value it teaches, and I put it up in my daughters room. She loved it and we had a great chat about what it means to have character and to be true to yourself. Then we looked at the tube it came in and saw that it said for boy. Apparently there are two sets of these, one for a boy and one for a girl. The girl one is pictured on the back and it just says Dream. So that brings up two questions: Why does this company feel the need to limit its market by dividing something as universal as inspiration into gender categories, and more importantly, why are boys encouraged to stay the same and girls encouraged to want for more? Its just more of the subtle way our Cinderella culture trains girls to passively sit around and wait for things to get better.
