I know its probably a cost related thing, but just have to wonder why in this day and age the air transportation industry still must rely on searchers finding a black box from a crashed aircraft in order to then backtrack through recorded data to attempt to determine basic status information in the moments before a disaster, so that experts can then dissect that recorded information to maybe determine what happened. It would seem that if we have the technology to send a small spacecraft to a far distant comet millions of miles out in space, know where both the comet and the spacecraft are at all times, communicate with that spacecraft and land it on that very small rock in the far reaches of outer space .. then we should have the ability to have live streaming tracking and operational data via satellite for all commercial airliners .. or at least for those operating over open ocean. Heck, OnStar knows where my car is at all times and sends me a monthly email to tell me operational status and any service I may need to perform ... Best I can calculate, this latest missing airliner was only traveling about 850 miles from departure to destination, although over open ocean, and apparently was lost about half way into the flight. Perhaps a new market for OnStar or a similar service? I just do not understand why there is not live streaming data which would give all operational data and a constant pinpoint of location.
