I know several of the best / worst hackers on the planet. Nothing about this movie has them right. The best hackers fall into one of three categories: Social Engineers: They know what to say to get people to do what they want or expose data. These tend to be smooth talkers who make their living running cons. Math Geeks: These are totally socially inept, they border on rain man they beat cryptography with huge tables of numbers, and sheer power of CPU, they have access to dark nets of slave computers that they can push a button and harness at will. Sploit collectors: These are Script kiddies on steroids they have lists of Zero Day vulnerabilities that go on for days. They live in the chat rooms and dark nets swapping info with others, they barter for information and they dont solve problems so much as identify which key to try. There is a 4th that I know exists but I have never met, they are ring leaders. They manage to get all three of these on a team either through bribes, or through promise of fame, and they leverage the skills of each without telling them what they are working on. These are rare, (thank God) and dangerous. Swordfish was a movie about someone with this kind of skill. They are real, I have heard people who were made rich by the hacks they pulled with these, and I have seen others end up in jail for following them.
