I know some of us are new facebook friends and some are old...but this bears repeating! Please understand that I love my son... There are two things I will unfriend for. I am not secretive about them. The first one is using the word retarded. The word “retarded” derives from the term “mental retardation.” Years ago, that was a clinical diagnosis used to describe people with intellectual disability. But words evolve and change meaning. The words “retard” and “retarded” have now become vile and hurtful insults. So much so that changes were made. In 2010, Congress itself replaced “mental retardation” and “mentally retarded” in federal health, education and labor laws with the term “intellectual disability.” The word “retarded” has morphed into a slur—why many people are shunning the word. When I look at the early documents regarding my son, I see that word. That was once his diagnosis. My sweet beautiful Ty Christian. When you use it in a derogatory manner, you are saying my son is less than worthy of dignity. I will unfriend you after I educate you. The other is foul language or obscene pictures. My computer stays on. I am not always in the room, but it is on. First my son can read. Second, there are therapists, caregivers and family in this room often. There are children who come to play here. And then there is me. I dont like that. I, again, will let you know and then unfriend. If its too much and you wish to go ahead and unfriend me, please know I will not be offended!
