I know some people say thats just the way it is, but it always makes me sad when I hear an animal go extinct. A few years ago the baiji or Chinese/Yangtze river dolphin was declared probably extinct, and that was sad. Now the orang utan (roughly translated as man of the forest in Malay) is facing probably extinction. Their forest homes in Borneo and Sumatra are rapidly being bulldozed for timber, to make way to palm oil plantation, and poaching. I think avoiding palm oil as much as you can (sadly its hard to, and its not always even labelled!) is a small thing you can do. I admit the demise of the orang utan would be particularly sad for me...they are of course close to us, but they seem like such peaceful beings who just mind their own business eating fruits and stuff, they are more solitary than chimps and gorillas and if they had an MBTI theyd probably be INFPs lol. They seem very thoughtful and emotional too. Unfortunately Ive only seen them in the zoo and a sanctuary in Borneo. Id personally like to do what I can to help save them, but sadly it seems sort of futile too :(.
