I know that Ricky Gervais got a lot of stick for Derek but its just appeared on Netflix and I thought Id give it a go. I know there are moments in the pilot episode where perhaps Derek is portrayed as clumsy and is victimised because of his condition but to me, more than anything it shows the innocence and kindhearted nature so often displayed by those within the autistic spectrum. I was genuinely moved by the end of that episode which is what drama is meant to do but whats more, surely anything that encourages us to recognise a persons humanity regardless of their physical or mental abilities is a good thing. Yes it highlights the cruelty and ridicule that some people are unfortunately subject too but that is a harsh reality to not address it would mean that the problem was never solved. (Before you comment please bear in mind this is my personal view and is based solely around the pilot episode)
