I know there are several people that absolutely do recognize the significance of this Fridays World of Outlaws race at the Bloomington Speedway. But for the few that do not, let me give you a little perspective. In June of 1976 a brash 22 year old, by the name of Steve Kinser won his first sprint car feature event. Just happens, it was at Bloomington Speedway. This really wasn’t a big surprise that Steve won, honestly it was almost expected. After all he was the son of Bob Kinser, the brother of Randy Kinser, the cousin of Sheldon Kinser, these are drivers that only accepted one thing, and that is winning! Bob Kinser is in my book, is one of the all time greatest drivers to ever strap on a sprint car! PERIOD! There are a lot of very good drivers that have driven and won in sprint cars, but in my lifetime, Bob Kinser is one of the best there ever was. Had there been a World of Outlaws sanction in his era, who knows how many championships he could have won? So, as I said, not very many were stunned when this kid with the curly blonde locks pulled his helmet off in the winners circle, but what nobody ever dreamed, was what exactly had just begun, that Friday night on the red clay banks of Bloomington Speedway. In the next “38” years Steve Kinser would set the sprint car world on its ear! Bob Kinser’s son would follow in his father’s giant footsteps, and along the way, leave the record book in tatters! Steve Kinser is sprint car racing, everywhere there is sprint car racing. During Steve’s reign as “King” he has amassed nearly double the World of Outlaw feature wins of his nearest rival. Now, it has come time to hang up the helmet, some 38 years since his first ever sprint car feature win, Steve Kinser comes home to the very same track where it all began one last time, as a full time World of Outlaw racer. I can not even imagine not being there to witness this historic night. I have said it before and I will say it again, Steve’s records may all be broken someday, but there will never be another Steve Kinser. He is one of the two best to ever to drive a sprint car, and they are both named Kinser!
