I know there is no perfect solution when it comes to our healthcare system. I can however tell you about my situation and how it affects me. I signed up for health insurance and have been paying $175 every month like clockwork. The majority of the years I worked I paid into health insurance, and paid more because I am a woman, and of child bearing age. My health insurance company dropped me last month because I was diagnosed with two forms of thyroid cancer in March of this year, 2013. They are stating I was diagnosed with cancer before I signed up for insurance this past December, which is a fallacy. I am currently appealing the decision of course. In the meantime I am responsible for paying for all of my medical expenses. The bills are rolling in at full force. I have had two surgeries and radiation treatment. The cancerous tumor was taken out along with my thyroid. My prognosis is good now, but I am still not in the clear. I am still in need of tests at this point to make sure that the cancer is gone or if it has come back and I might need to have further treatment. One set of blood tests alone cost $700. I had two tests done in the past two-month period alone. I am also on medication that I have to take very day for the rest of my life. This cost is $122 for three months. This does not include the doctor’s appointments I had and will have. Not only am I living in fear of my cancer returning, but also how I am going to pay my medical bills. If the healthcare act is passed I can get care regardless of my pre existing condition. If this does not pass I will not be able to get health insurance because I have cancer. No one deserves to be treated this way. Am I going to continue to live in this fear of not having the care I need because I cannot afford to pay? I have been working since I was 13 years old. I am responsible and never ask for a hand out. Because of this refusal by my health insurance company I had to rely on my friends and family, whom set up fundraisers to assist in my medical care. If it was not for them I do not know what I would do. I am grateful for their help. Not everyone has this support system. I hope that my government is responsible and does the right thing.
