I know this area of Michigan and, in fact, spent two years - TopicsExpress

I know this area of Michigan and, in fact, spent two years directing a federal program for the Muskegon Heights Public Schools which is a pocket of poverty with a population of African Americans. This article is stunning to me but not surprising; a council of people, mostly male, who have no connection to the soil and the comfort of growing ones own food, have denied that right to others in the community. Truthfully, Muskegon is not considered an affluent city. I do have to wonder how much influence has been made by a large Michigan corporation that sells produce. It is the first time that I have ever heard a personal vegetable garden described as a blight. The strange thing is that they have a $4 million farmers market; but cannot condone neighborhood gardens and the selling of produce on a small local scale. I know from experience that most backyard gardeners generously give extra produce to neighbors
