I know this is going to be unpopular, but this is from my experience as a trainer and a person who struggles with weight. While some people are naturally heavy and have been large their entire lives, thats not the majority. Sorry its not. From my experience as a trainer and discussing with a great deal of trainers and also having doctors call me to help their patients- its food (in general). Its not carbs, fat or protein. Its eating too much and exercising too little. We are a culture of immediate gratification- TV, internet and fast food (not McDonalds, but all the pre-made foods you eat). We dont want to work for it or take the time to do it. Hell, I dont want to do it and thats why I gained 40 pounds since I moved back from Huachuca. Its too easy out here to get pre-made vegetarian options and since I dont work in a gym- I skip that. Guess who is at fault? Me! Do I have issues? Yep. I have Major Depressive Disorder and yes it makes getting out of bed next to impossible some days. It makes looking at the mirror a dreaded affair as my weight has gone up. However, when it comes down to it- I ate crappy food and I didnt go to the gym. When I looked at peoples journals when I did training with a nutritionist with me- we saw the same thing! Too much high calorie/low nutrient foods! Many people dont even know what theyre eating or how much. Like simple things- too many grains, not enough vegetables. Also CORN IS A DAMNED GRAIN PEOPLE- NOT A VEGETABLE! I would give people a quiz on serving size. Pour a bowl of cereal. Consistently people would pour 1.5-2 servings of cereal when eyeballing it. How much is a serving of steak? Its not 8 oz! Its 4 oz. Thats 4 oz for EVERYONE. That means a lot of people are eating twice the amount they should and that adds up. It isnt carbs or fat. Its just too much. Hint- plates are literally bigger than prior years, so use smaller plates (salad plates work well). So what does that mean? Bottom line measure your food and eat a variety of different types of food. Then, DVR your show and go for a walk with your family. You want to get a personalized assessment go to you doctor and ask to see a nutritionist (if covered).
