I know this is not Watts, but I am certain it would get his stamp of approval. I stumbled upon this after having read lots of posts to this group, today. We have so many questions. Although all of this philosophizing is mesmerizingly interesting, all we really want is to be happy. Happy seems to rest at the feet of this mysterious thing we call enlightenment. Some may think enlightenment is power - each of us have our own ideas about what it is or we think we do. But without planting our feet in the ground of love (if you will), well never find it. All of the ancient wisdom traditions teach this - much of those texts provided the foundation for all of Watts great works. To be at peace. Thats what AWs work and so many others before and since have taught. The pithy answer that appears trite and simplistic is: just follow love. Gratitude and compassion are the only guides we need. This and the ceaseless desire to rise above the mundane and explore higher grounds of consciousness. When we find it, desire has fulfilled its duty and peace is ours. We are peace. But we are stubborn and we think were pretty clever so by and large we dont take to the love shtick. If we do give it a try, well quickly come to realize how difficult it is to love purely and unselfishly - to mindfully and dutifully choose love and not fear. Observing every thought and then finding there are more and more thoughts beneath those thoughts to be addressed and reconciled. None of this is the easy road at all. But if its got you - you know its the only road for you. Now, Rilkes quote: “… I want to beg you, as much as I can, dear sir, to be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and to try to love the questions themselves like locked rooms and like books that are written in a very foreign tongue. Do not now seek the answers, which cannot be given you because you would not be able to live them. And the point is, to live everything. Live the questions now, Perhaps you will then gradually, without noticing it, live along some distant day into the answer.” —from Letters to a Young Poet by Rainer Maria Rilke
