I know this isnt going to be popular but Im going to defend the ref last night!! When I watched it live I thought he stepped in too quickly (like everyone else), but now Ive watched it a few times, Groves took 3 big shots flush on the chin, his hands had dropped and his head had dropped (he was actually looking at the canvas as Froch was lining up his next shot). It doesnt matter that Groves was winning - so was Michael Watson when Eubank KOd him). It only takes ONE punch to change someones life FOR EVER (or worse), and as a ref myself Ive always said that Id rather stop 1000 fights too early than stop even one fight too late. My 1st, 2nd and 3rd priorities in the ring are the safety of the boxers .. NOTHING ELSE MATTERS. So my message to the ref is Well done for having the guts to make a split-second decision that may well have saved a young mans life, even though you knew you would be hammered for it. If anyone wants to see the result of a ref letting a fight go on too long, look on YouTube for Enzo Macarinelli being KOd by Alexander Frenkel - now there is a ref who SHOULD be banned!!
