I know this may sound controversial, but: Not all kids should be winners, they should not all get a token for participation, they should not be spared the sting of failure and defeat. If they keep getting treated like this...then what do we expect them to work HARDER for? How can we anticipate a generation that tries HARDER, that looks obstacles in the face and say I wont go down without a fight! They need a reason to reach for the stars because if we make them think they ALREADY have them when they DONT...then we will have a generation of people who settle on mediocrity and are okay with being exactly like their neighbor. Kids need to feel the sting of failure if we want more Steve Job-types, kids wanting to be president, self-motivators, like Henry Ford, Isaac Newton, Thomas Edison, Abraham Lincoln, Lucille Ball, Emily Dickinson, JK Rowling, and Michael Jordan...who were all failures and wanted to DO BETTER and show the world they can rise! Let them fail and let them not ALL be equal...then encourage them to RISE
