I know we have discussed this before, in fact several times, on the Classic Film Noir period, which is said to run from 1940 until 1963, but essentially it ended with Touch of Evil in 1958. Its beginning? I think most Noir film buffs agree it was in 1941, the classic of them all, The Maltese Falcon. What great Noir film bookends, The Maltese Falcon and a Touch of Evil. And in between, members of our group have expressed that well in the tread started by Lissa Whites Why do we like noir? Were a diverse group and we have come together in our love of this genre. Do we think like the characters in noir films?. The Maltese Falcon introduces elements that later became hallmarks of the film Noirs. That film introduced the femme fatale, the alienated and amoral hero -- the protagonist Sam Spade, the dark and disturbed urban environment in which they live, visual representation by light and shadows, and the narrative of the pulp ficton novels of that day. Touch of Evil exaggerates and reworks these elements in both its narrative and visual style. Both films react against the dominant ideology in film of that era and pushed the boundries of imagination which we call The Film Noirs! And in between those two boundries are some good Noir veiwing!
