I know what I have to do now. I have to keep breathing, because tomorrow the sun will rise. And who knows what the tide may bring in - Tom Hanks Character in Castaway In every persons life there is a wilderness season. Its a learning season. It can be brought on by unforeseen circumstances and it can brought on by circumstances we knowingly brought on ourselves. old school looks to the blame game while the new school boldly moves forward, smarting with pain but resolved and determined....Most likely to repeat its cycle endlessly, satisfying its heart with its desires while blocking its inner voice of common sense that pleads with warnings and caution. Such is what we all witness most everyday. We see it almost always in our neighbors, friends, family, co-workers, etc. Not only do we see it and recognize it but we generally always share it with someone else. It is indeed an irresistible and tantalizing thing, nearly impossible to keep to ourselves. Such are these errors, flaws, mistakes of poor judgement we see in others. But sadly, we rarely we see these fatal flaws in ourselves. The wilderness season, as painful as it is, is meant to be a learning period, a transforming season. Its a time to reflect and take stock, examine ones self, ones priorities and focus. Being honest with and about oneself isnt easy or desirable but it is a must. What needs to follow is positioning oneself for real change. Surrounding oneself with the right people, positive people. Positive people who understand what real goals are and passionately pursue them while being sober minded about the common sense rules of life. These people understand the importance of living life passionately. Theyve learned how to enjoy the journey towards the goal, the process, not just the goal or destination itself. They also understand that while occasionally we may have to throw caution to the wind in faith to experience some of lifes thrills, we mustnt ignore the cautions of common sense. The warnings we blocked out in the past that led us to that awful and fateful wilderness...again. There are boundaries that shouldnt be crossed and Your new situation isnt the exception to the rule. Such delusions are actually instances where ones faith is lacking and ones blinders are on...willfully. Rather than learn and prepare and position for whats intended, we forge ahead for what becomes momentary fulfillment while inevitable derailing awaits. Learning is important. Our wilderness experiences however they befall us are for learning. In scripture, the Israelites spent 40 very long painful years in the wilderness before learning and becoming fully prepared for The promised Land. Jesus spent just 40 days in the wilderness to prepare for a work that would change and bless the world forever. How long will you spend in your wilderness? How often will you wander without learning? Your life isnt to be an endless cycle of rolling of the dice with each step. Stop. Humble yourself. Take stock. Be honest. Stop settling for the counterfeit. Look to whats genuine and learn. Then proceed.
