I learned last night why our ancestors used so much gold foil and mirrors in dimly lit homes. To reflect the light! People have done everything from stenciling a few well placed stars to elaborate designs and gilt! I have been a painter of murals for the home for over 20 years. There are some wonderful tutorials on Youtube! You also can find step by step designs in a craft store where you buy the needed supplies. We are in the process of gearing up to build an Italianate Villa with a touch of Dunans Castle West (LOL) or more appropriately our own little castillo de lago (castle on the Lake). I am contemplating a turret! I am painting Gessos and ceiling murals to make it a true little work of art. In the grande bathroom I am planning some metallic stenciling to reflect the light from a candle as I bathe in luxury looking out the flowing shears blowing in the wind on the attached bathroom balcony looking out over the hills and river below! I also recently discovered a trick to make the ceiling magical at night. After painting it white and drying till just tacky, adhere some clear crystal glitter and spray a finish product over it. Voila, glittering salon de beauty! The basics are easy and I can talk you through it if you want to try a small project first and work your way up. I recommend stenciling stars or swirls or other purchased stencil in Faux gold or silver foil! I usually use a rust colored primer to bring out the metal. Then you dab on the adhesive tak and when set, adhere the stencil with a special brush then apply the covering spray to set it! The large murals must be planned out and painted one part at a time. I use a pencil and usually just acrylic paint which is as good as oil or better on a wall and not as messy and tricky as gesso which is an expert ranked craft! It is all doable though, so make your home your own. I have painted a mural on my husbands Library ceiling of Vikings! Our one non Italian all Dunans room will be the great Hall or the library in the new home. My husband creates custom shelves with poetry atop each one. We believe in custom work by our own hands! Too many lost arts around! It will have a huge castle fireplace big enough to stand in and a ceiling mural along with long board set into the ceiling and painted with our numerous family arms! Here are a few ideas. My specialty is Trompe-lœil or fool the eye painting! In a few of these it looks as if the room or ceiling is taller or goes on forever. That is all paint! While my grande entry will be all gesso and gilt, the rest of the house will have a few well placed murals mostly on the ceiling or wall of formal rooms and around the chandeliers on the ceiling because you can get out of hand with this stuff! Less is better! I have put some Medieval murals on here also. You can even paint a Trompe-lœil tapestry or family tree. My husbands is painted on a wall in the historic Library in Cannon Ohio! Maybe if my health improves, I might even be able to gift Dunans with a lovely touch of Medieval Trompe-lœil! You tube and the web abound in instruction as do the craft stores and I will be more than happy to talk you through one! Lady Donna.
