I learned very early in ministry that you communicate differently with loved ones whose family member committed suicide as opposed to the way you communicate with a person who is contemplating suicide. In addition to seeking all the help possible, a person considering suicide should realize: 1. Suicide is a violation of God’s commandment against murder. Suicide is the murder of one’s self. 2. Suicide is a violation of God’s commandment that we love ourselves. If a person loves himself, he will not destroy himself. Suicide is an act of self-abhorrence. 3. Suicide is a violation of God’s commandment that we honor our bodies as His temple. A person does not have the right to destroy someone else’s property. We do not own our body (we are stewards only), and therefore it is not ours to destroy. 4. Suicide is contrary to God’s plan that our lives be a blessing to others. Suicide brings enormous grief, heartache, and sorrow to surviving family and friends. 5. Suicide is contrary to the fulfilling of God’s plan for our life. No one can receive or fulfill the plan of God for his life if he removes himself from the earth by suicide. There are other angles to this painful topic, but this is one important facet. The above is from our book, Life After Death: Rediscovering Life After the Loss of a Loved One.
