I lied, Ill post it now then! Old Boys vs St Mary’s HT: 14-10 FT: 28-16 A wet and windy afternoon and a return to playing on the hallowed St Mary’s grounds saw the Old Boys use the conditions to avenge last year’s defeat with a convincing win over a young team with large potential; the victory for the Old Boys was all the more poignant as it marked the 10th anniversary since its inception to remember the lives of 2 former St Mary’s Rugby League players. It wasn’t all smooth sailing for the Old Boys though as the current squad were keen to win consecutive matches against the Old Boys, Roadkill feeling the brunt of their early aggression with a cut face (though it made a vast improvement compared to the moustache.) It took only 4 minutes for the young guns to take the lead, Emmo Allen scampering down the wing to touch down in the corner. Old Boy’s came flying back though and 2 minutes later the scores were tied, a sublime grubber kick from Stevie Owen saw the ball scooped up by Wes “Cheese” Newton for an easy try. The weather played havoc all day and the quick running game that would have favoured the St Mary’s boys was soon abandoned for up the shirt rugby far more befitting to the Old Boys, this did not stop the Simmies taking the lead once more, the high ball kick dropped by the Old Boy’s saw Jack Miller recover the ball and score between the posts. Not to be outdone the Old Boy’s replied in similar fashion, the high ball dropped by Simmies saw Robin “Monty” Montgomery scoop the ball up to also score between the posts. The Old Boy’s would take the lead just before the half, Ryan “Ches” Chester on the receiving end of some lovely passing rugby managing to score in the corner of the field. After a rejuvenating half time snack of Samosa’s courtesy of Naz’s wife the Old Boy’s were ready to take control of the game, but not before Simmie’s were able to take the lead one last time, Miller again on the favourable end of a high ball reception gone wrong for the Old Boy’s which saw him score between the posts once more. From then on though it was the Old Boy’s who took control, firstly with Dave “Monster” McMeeken using his dominating size to power over the line against 5 Simmie’s players to put the Old Boy’s back in front before Rich “VJ” Retallick increased the lead with a try in the corner following a good string of passes amongst the pack. The game was wrapped up 5 minutes from time when Kit Bispham (definitely not Roadkill) used his strength to bundle his way over the line against a wall of defenders to rapturous applause from the sidelines. With the end of the game, congratulations were issued and many pints were drunk, we wish the current St Mary’s squad the best of the luck for the upcoming season and hope to see some silverware on our return next year. So with another year passed and another game in the books it stands at 6 Victories to the Old Boys, 3 to the Simmie’s and 1 draw. Roll on 2015. Adam Barley
