I lifted weights this evening. Im really gonna pay for that. A few years ago I started training for marathons simply for the sake of giving structure to my running schedule. It had gotten boring to run 6 miles one day, lift weights the next, run 6, lift, etc., etc. Plus I was noticing that my running pace was slowing down. Training for a marathon took care of all that. Last year my niece announced she would be getting married the day before I usually run my marathon and I was kind of relieved (thanks, Lara, and thanks for having me assist you down the aisle!). I still liked the training but the race was turning into an Exactly why I am driving all the way up to Corning, NY, alone, staying in a Holiday Inn, running with a couple thousand strangers, and then driving back home in pain? affair. So this year I still did the training and really didnt miss capping it off with the race. I love the camaraderie of spending time with runners but the truth is, Im really just not all that competitive - I couldnt care less how I do on race day. But one of the facts of marathon training life is that it really does take over your life for a couple of months towards the end. When youre running 50 miles or more a week, other kinds of exercise just get pushed off to the side. Now that my marathon training schedule has ended (since Im not racing this weekend, I am not tapering, which is where I would be if I were running, say, the Bmore), Im back down to about 30-40 miles a week, Im seeing my weight slowly creep back up to a normal (for me) level, and now Im adding weight lifting back to my routine. Joanne keeps laughing and saying I better hope that Jesus is planning to make an appearance to heal the lame in Ellicott City (and decides that old weight lifters count) because she figures thats my only hope of being mobile tomorrow! I keep feeling my muscles twitching. Unghhhhh. Ill just run it off. Yeah, thatll work. Sure it will. Wheres that aspirin???
