I like Tracy Emin. Firstly, because she has entitled her show The Last Great Adventure is you and the blurb underneath on her show website reads The work is about rites of passage,time and age, and the simple realisation that we are always alone. And if thats self-obsessed then of course it is, we all are, and lucky her for having really been able to focus on it and actually do a show about it. Secondly, because she is highly intelligent. And why is she so highly intelligent? Because she knows that having children and being an artist can never truly be compatible. To be able to detach completely and go off and live in your own head for extended periods of time is vital to the artistic process and that is why there are good artists and great artists. And when you have children you simply cannot do that, can you? No matter how much you would want to, there are children to care for and nourish and Im not talking about the logistics here. And so I hope she does go into the hall of the greatest women artists who ever lived if only to stick two fingers up at all those women and their arguments about childcare. And this business about only having one child? Sorry? Forgive me if I am missing the whole point here but since when were children treated in terms of mathematics? I now leave you to go off to dream of a Tracy Emin show entitled F**k the working mother and her self-justifications.... Note, NOT the working mother, but the self-justifications. Or maybe Im being a bit extreme here. Think shes being conservative with her pram-in-the-hall argument? Think of it as pram-in-the-mind then, and I hope youll get my meaning.
