I like how when I go outside to smoke a cigarette, I become the designated free cigarette-sample dispenser for all downtown bums and part-time cigarette-smoking college kids. I have no problem with charity--but when it becomes an everyday thing.... Furthermore, why is it appropriate to ask people--complete strangers--for cigarettes? If you see someone drinking a latte, you dont ask for a sip. Or: if you see someone walking down the street, listening to their iPod, you dont stop them, like: Hey. That the new Mumford and Sons? Let me get a listen. I realize those are probably horribly flawed analogies, but I think the premise is the same: whether its a latte, an iPod, a slice of pizza or a cigarette, theyre all creature comforts that someone paid for--so why is it acceptable to ask strangers for one and not the others?
