I, like most people, read The Most Dangerous Game in Mr. Beutlers - TopicsExpress

I, like most people, read The Most Dangerous Game in Mr. Beutlers 9th grade English class. Then when I was in college, I read a criticism of this awesome piece of literature that claimed that it wasnt good literature, because the characterization was too flat because none of the characters were dynamic. It wasnt until today that i picked up this epic short story again to see who was right, Mr. B, or the jaded college critic. It turns out that The Most Dangerous Game is probably the most epic work of fiction of all time! Certainly the criticism that the characters are flat is true, many are even stereotypes! However, I believe flat characters is the only negative thing that could ever be said about this well-written work. Unless, of course you dont like Russians, since General Zaroff, the main antagonist, is a Russian, and much of this book is about him. This book has an excellent vocabulary and is a great adventure story as well. There are many layers to this work of fiction! My other English teacher in high school, Mrs. Esplin, said that the true mark of great literature was if this would be around in 100 years. Not only will The Most Dangerous Game still be around in 100 years, but in 100 years, it will still be impossible to tell if the setting is now, 50 years ago or 150 years ago! The characterization is adept. Now that Ive realized how amazing this piece of literature is, Ill be carefully studying it for years to come. If you havent read it, then pick up your kids 9th grade English reader, go to a library, or get it on your Kindle. Its well worth the hour of your time I still must read Richard Connells other works to find out if this monumental piece of literature was a flash in the pan, or if, like I suspect, Connell is even a better writer than John Steinbeck. Ill keep you updated. Oh, I guess the plot is a little hackneyed, too, but plot shouldnt be the main consideration in the overall value of any literary work.
