I like this guy already!! :D #Matty To the suggestion that Gary Rowett must be mad to take on the Birmingham City job, he was having none of it. Second from bottom in the Championship, coming off the back of the worst home result in club history, the 8-0 battering by Bournemouth, as well as off the field uncertainty. Not exactly a great mix. “Listen, you can look at it two ways, can’t you? said Rowett, at his formal unveiling as Blues manager. “You can say the team are low in confidence and say the team are rock bottom. “But sometimes, you know, a group of men need to be brought to rock bottom for them to regrow and regenerate. “And that’s what I will look to do. “I won’t see that as necessarily a negative. “I will try to give them all the opportunity to atone for Saturday (Bournemouth). “I have not even mentioned the weekend game to them, in fact As a manager, we lost two games 7-1. “You have got a choice haven’t you? “You either start crying about it and do nothing or you roll your sleeves up and try to get on with it and get a response from the players, and staff as well. “I will certainly give them the opportunity to do that this week in the training. “I saw a very good response from the players this morning already, and that’s all I can judge it on. Rowett said the challenge presented by Blues didnt faze him. “From a football point of view, it’s a decent starting point - things can only improve. “And things have got to improve very quickly. “Obviously I have got to try and assess and get our ideas as staff and my ideas as manager into the players and try to very, very quickly get some short term results. “Long term obviously the idea is to build the philosophy on the playing side, like we have done over the previous two and a half years at Burton Albion. “But it certainly doesn’t faze me. “I am looking forward to working with the players. They were very receptive this morning to our ideas, they worked very, very hard. “And I have said to them that if they work very, very hard and you have a real togetherness about you I can accept the occasional lack of quality or the occasional misplaced pass and I will try to work with them with that and improve them as much as we can.” Rowett said he was not the sort of character to settle for an easy life. “Why Birmingham? Firstly, I am always attracted to challenges, and I know this job will be a challenge. “That’s first and foremost. “I prefer challenges to the easy life, if you like. “I also believe there is lots of potential in the team and the squad. “And the main reason is the size of the club, the history of the club and that I empathise with the players and the supporters as well because I played in front of them. “I have been here for some very big play-off games, many moons ago, and I have sampled the atmosphere. “And it, this job, was just something, as an overall picture, I couldn’t turn down. -
