Notes from the artist: This is a mini-series Ive just completed, or, a triptych of sorts. It consists of 3 Surreal-ish portraits, each featuring my representation of a modern girl and a snake. As such, they are named The Temptation, The Asphyxiation, and The Coronation. The snake symbolically represents religion, specifically referencing the Biblical story of Eve in the Garden of Eden. Not necessarily spirituality, mind you, but religion… Religion defined by and preached through fantastic stories, governed by strict rules, and claimed as ultimate truth by its followers. The interaction between snake and girl is a narrative on modern womans struggle to fathom the application of these antiquated virtues in modern-day society. Obviously, this painted exploration stems from my own personal spiritual journey and experience that ranges from Christian missionary work, to dissent from the church, to exploration of eastern philosophy, metaphysical theology, and evolutionary biology. The narrative follows the modern girl as she is tempted by the serpent in The Temptation, to her being strangled by religion itself inThe Asphyxiation, and on to her eventual peace with religion, or personal enlightenment in The Coronation.
