I like to explain Advent like this: Its the season of anticipation - TopicsExpress

I like to explain Advent like this: Its the season of anticipation of the birth of our savior, Christ. Its the promise of something greater than the daily disappointments, the depressive realities of human existence, the disconnection we have from one another. All of that in the birth of one kid. As Christians -- who listen to the call -- were called to lives of service to one another; to make the world a slightly better place for one another. Its because we base our lives on the teachings of Christ, the one who taught us how to live lives of service to one another in the hopes of engendering some sense of communion. I dont remember where I heard it, but I suspect that it was some Lutheran or Episcopalian who said it, but I try not to judge. The life and sacrifice of Christ was God telling us not that we should be as perfect as His example, but that God was finished being an accountant of our sins; God did not create us to be sacrifices to wash away an inherently sinful nature; Christs life and sacrifice was telling us that we are loved and cared for just as we are, without the need to constantly apologize or feel less than. And this is the time when we look forward to the fulfillment of all the promises of Christ, by His teachings, His life and His sacrifice. Its a lot to pile onto the birth of one kid, 2,000 years ago. But really, the birth of one child is all it takes for us to remember all that is good and right in the world and in each other.
