I like to look at the contact sheets from which famous photographs come. Its a reminder to me that the great photographers worked hard to get their images. You will see purpose and method to their work. They were not waiting for inspiration, they put themselves out there and they worked it. Studying contact sheets can sometimes lead you inside the minds of the photographer, as you follow their working of the camera and their thinking. They experimented and explored. Sometimes patient. Sometimes active. And sometimes, they were uncertain. Most reassuring, they were human, just like you and me, they made mistakes. Two books to look at are; Magnum Contact Sheets and William Klein: ABC. Thank you to Len Metcalf for sharing Arnold Newmans work which prompted me to share these with you.
