I like unions that work. It must surely be indisputable that, if people can get along and work together, thats got to be better than trying to do everything on your own? So: does the union with Scotland work? For the rest of the UK, it seems a no-brainer that it does, It seems to me that Scotland has brought a lot to the party, over the years (which must be the only way of judging an ongoing Union!?). For Scotland it clearly isnt so simple; the big problem is theyve had national governments they didnt vote for, for a very long time and those governments have often run things to the detriment of Scotland over other areas of the UK (Scotland arent alone in thinking that!) With that being the case, Im not quite so sure why the SNP are so keen on the EU, where Scotland would have even less influence than it does now in the UK, but I digress.... Ultimately I guess Im an optimist; I believe in partnerships. I really believe Scotland and the rest of the UK are, over the long-term, better off together. Lets make no mistake either, the decision is a long-term one: it will have to stand for many generations, either way. And, as much as Mr Salmond seems to want his cake and eat it, complete with icing, cherries and hundreds and thousands on top, independence will need to mean that - you cant expect to have full control over everything and yet still piggyback on someone elses currency, in particular. Theres been quite a lot of flag-waving going on in the last few days, recalling past shared glories, the jingoism of which which can sometimes actually put people off, but history really does, taken in the round, usually show us the future. I reckon the Union has, viewed and averaged over its lifespan, been amazingly successful and would most likely continue to be. As a final thought, Scotland is just the most beautiful place and has lots of amazing people and Id like to be able to continue to visit without a passport, border controls or feeling like a complete and utter foreigner... I personally would like you to stay in the Union, so please vote No
