I lived in Southern Hills from 1960 to 1966, 4 - 9 years of age. I remember the great neighbors there. The night several gathered in our backyard at Hollyhock and Ferndale to watch the Echo satellite pass over head. The badminton tournament held in our backyard that Eric Johnson and Todd Nelson and others played in. The wonderful Halloweens with so many other kids in costume with their parents. The annual Fall Festival that Southern Hills Elementary school held - with a Cake Walk and a Haunted House. And the Field Day there where I was a replacement in the 3rd grade 3-Legged Race - my teammate and I took home the blue ribbon! The mosquito fogging truck that literally obscured the surrounding houses until the insecticide cloud wafted away. The Thomas Water Well Service that would keep the neighborhood drinking water from our own wells during dry summers when the water table dropped - except for us. My dad built his own derrick out of oil field pipe, and with help from neighbors lowered our pipe enough that we could say thanks, but no thanks when Mr. Thomas rig drove past. The sweet smell of the sanitation trucks - flatbeds with red wooden railing to keep the precious haul safe. And the racket all of those metal trash cans and lids made as the garbage men slammed them against the red railing to empty them. The first day in Mrs. Loftons 3rd grade class when, at the very moment she tells the class what do do if anyone feels they are getting sick - I get sick. And after a girl announces to everyone, Mrs. Lofton, I think Jimmy is getting sick, I make my way out of the classroom to the restroom down the walkway where Craig Bradshaw informs me, Gee, Jimmy, I think youre getting sick! Seeing my dentist, Dr. McInnis, ride in the Shriners Parade. So many great people and great memories!
