I look every student I pass in the hall right in the eye, smile and at least nod hello. When the time and volume feels right Ive tossed a compliment, asked a quick question about their outfit it otherwise started a brief exchange. Some look at me strange. . I was just thinking the other day that in my entire career, Ive never had more kids wave and even shout hi to me than the past 3. Kids I dont have in class. Some had me a year ago. Some are friends of choir members who maybe saw saw a concert or chatted with us at lunchtime...SOME are those kids I simply nodded at or said smile as we passed each other as strangers. This tells me that we have more kids in these past 3 years who need to reach out to humanity in the smallest of ways for validation and a feeling of belonging.
