I lost the only key I have to my 2006 Lexus. I had the car towed to the Lexus dealership. Subsequent conversation with Perky Lexus Service Lady (PLSL) PLSL: Ms. Chiero we have ordered your keys. The cost of two keys + reprogramming will be $760.42. Is this OK? Kathy: You have my vehicle. I cant drive it without keys. The only thing missing is the ransom note. Yes. $380.21 per key is just fine. PLSL: The keys will be in on Tuesday. We have a FREE loaner car for you. A 2014 RX 350. Is this OK? Kathy: (Understanding that FREE is relative, I just agreed to a modest mortgage for two keys and this is the let-them-take-the-puppy-home method of sales. A forced test drive.) Yes, but ONLY if its cherry red. I love cherry red. PLSL: Oh, Im sorry its not red (She didnt get my humor.) Is black OK? Kathy: (Feeling bad that Im making her job harder...) Yes, black is my second favorite color!! PLSL: And we will return your vehicle to you clean and with a FREE full tank of gas. Kathy: (Mentally figuring that if I allow the a generous allowance of $20/key I just paid $47.50 per gallon for that gas...) Thank you...how nice of you! I drive off in my (for three days) brand new gleaming black RX350 amazed at how far these cars have come in 8 years. Maybe instead of a new keys...a new car? But...realizing that $760.42 is very close to a monthly payment over four years for this car. Thats a lot of keys.
