I love Capra’s It’s a Wonderful Life. It’s a fantastic piece of work. Although obviously it has more power this time of year, it can be viewed anytime and still work. I think those that dismiss it as saccharin, schmaltzy or dated are missing the point. It’s about an honest man who has sacrificed everything for the greater good, only to be driven to the point of suicide by a corrupt banking system. How much more relevant can you get? That said, it does come a close second when compared to my favourite film of all time ‘Harvey’, also featuring the brilliant James Stewart. The film, if you’ve never seen it, has tolerance and understanding at its heart and even (in my opinion) carries a punk ethic. Whilst the main character Elwood P Dowd, may not wear a safety pin or play loud caustic riffs on a stolen guitar, he does deliver an anti conformist message aided by screwball comedy, copious Martinis and a certain invisible rabbit, measuring 6’ 3”. If you have seen it, see it. If you haven’t seen Its a Wonderful Life see it. Watch both again even if you have seen them. I’m off to find myself a Pooka. https://youtube/watch?v=hBvpxzl54D8
