I love Captain America. Which is odd, because I dont really enjoy such pure characters. Im just more comfortable with relativism and grittiness and a darker outlook, and Captain America isnt any of those things. There has never been a Captain American Returns graphic novel, or Whatever Happened To the Star-Spangled Man, and even Marvel has pointed out that even in the Iron Age of Liefeld-inspired characters like Bloodspatter or when the Punisher and Venom were the biggest draws, you couldnt remake Captain America as anything else. Captain America does the right thing, and Captain America always TRIES to do the right thing. His hope and desire to do good is inexhaustible. He doesnt have Batarangs, a bow, guns, strength to heave cars, webshooters, or adamantium claws. He carries a shield, to protect people, and if he can use it as a weapon, its only by sacrificing his own safety. I remember in the Avengers theres a scene when one of the flying monsters is coming crashing down and everyone takes cover, but Captain America raises his shield and covers Natasha. Not that shes less vulnerable than Clint, or that its even mentioned again, because thats just what Captain America does. The Hulk and Thor and Iron Man the Black Widow and Hawkeye are killing aliens, and Captain America is trying to save hostages in what seems like a distraction from the main fight. But thats what Captain America does. And really, thats the most inspiring thing about him. Captain America represents America, our country, the way we want it to be, the way we wish we were. And while I cant whitewash American history to say that we fulfull the ideals we so often claim, I would stack up the written and drawn history of his comics to say, this is what Captain America would do. I wish we were the America that Steve Rogers believes in, not because he doesnt see the bad side, but because the honest belief he has that we COULD BE. Im really excited about the Winter Soldier.
