I love RedLetterMedia, but this just goes to show that those who have dismissed the Hobbit films are generally unfamiliar with the book as well as the lore of Middle-Earth itself. Not only is the first film, An Unexpected Journey, actually the best, the third, The Battle of the Five Armies, is extremely faithful to the latter section of the novel and thus features an absolutely compelling execution of the darker conflict of the story (yeah...the gold conflict is directly intrinsic to the ring in LOTR, its a major part of Tolkiens writing--but of course none of these laymen realize this). Theres the common complaint that the characters arent interesting enough to get invested in; at the same time, however, the same people that make this ridiculous complaint also notably didnt have good enough attention spans to actually pay attention and enjoy the first act of the first film, which, incidentally, features all of the characterizations, everything that is supposed to draw your attention to these characters.
