I love Stanley Kubricks The Shining. But Ive read the book by Stephen King, and Ive always been bugged by the differences between the Jack Torrance character. In the book its a descent into insanity while in the movie, Jack Torrance is crazy from the beginning. But this has changed my mind about everything. Its an extremely long read, so heres the TL;DR: 1) The author started out with a fun exercise by looking for continuity errors in Kubricks The Shining. He found that Kubrick deliberately put continuity errors in probably every shot, and it means something. 2) Nothing in the movie matches anything in the book. Nothing at all. Even key pieces of dialog are slightly changed to alter the meaning. This is deliberate. The fact that I only saw Jack Torrance being different means I wasnt paying attention. 3) The movie is a mirror image of itself: What happens 11 minutes in has a corresponding scene 11 minutes from the end. Every significant scene in the first half has a counterpart in the second half, at exactly the same time from the end of the movie. And the timing and lengths of the scenes all adhere to numeric rules. I dont agree with everything the author says, but overall hes presented an incredible analysis of the movie.
