I love dancing. I should probably qualify that: I love to watch other people dance. I dont have the knack for it myself. The dancing gene was left out of my make-up. Anyone who has ever seen me try can attest to this. So its probably a little strange that I see dancing as a metaphor for how we live our lives. Think about it. As children one of our first impluses, when we can finally stand upright, is to dance. At that age we give ourselves up totally to the music. (Even if its just the music in our heads.) We thrash, gyrate, stomp and whirl with abandon, with the sheer exuberance of life. It doesnt hurt that we usually have a doting audience showering us with approval. Time goes on and dancing becomes limited to specific occasions. In school, we had sock hops, school dances and proms. in grade school the guys werent that interested so they mostly goofed off while the girls took it more seriously and danced with each other. That, too, is like life. Girls get it earlier than boys do. Biologically speaking they have a different agenda so life gets serious for them while the guys are still frogging each others arms. When the guys finally catch on, they become very self conscious about dancing, especially when they realize the girls are using their dancing ability to separate the wheat frrom the chaff. Rather than look bad, many avoid it completely. (Ill be over by the punch bowl with the rest of the chaff.) Like life, dancing becomes much more regimented after high school (probably during high school). The occasions for dancing become fewer and further between. Some stop dancing altogether. Im luckier than most. Every weekday morning, I spend the hours of 6:00 AM to 9:00 AM playing music on the radio. For the first two hours, Im usually alone.Often, I loose my inner two-year-old and just go with the music. I dont worry about form or technique; I just let it all out. I highly recommed it..
