I love homework ...especially when there is no right or wrong answer ... Journal Questions #1 1. How important is math in your day to day life? In what ways do you most commonly use math? To me, math is essential in everything I do. Its derivative logic allows me to negotiate time – when I need that extra snooze button early in the morning; during the day on how to coordinate expenses properly; and even communicating a problem solving session with impactful contribution. As a result, it becomes necessary to exercise my mind. It’s important to me not being left in the dark; meaning, I need to know how to prepare accordingly. Ultimately, math does contribute to just that. 2. Where do you encounter statistics in your day to day life? Do you think statistics are important for society? In your major or future career? As a Quality Assurance Analyst, my main objective is to try and find inconsistencies – where they come from and explain why – and eventually correct them. But, I must first find variables that cause such issues. In addition, I must detect whether it stems from a predictive or concurrent aspect to gather my analysis. As a result, my ongoing battle for accuracy becomes an issue of learning ‘outside the box’ a lot more often, in the process. In my opinion, it’s extremely important to assess statistical methods. It’s everywhere. It’s seen in probabilities in lottery ticket winnings and more so when making a simple decision and negotiating outcomes. It will definitely become a matter of perspective. In my ever-ending pursuit for my Psy.D, I’ll need to apply statistics with every perspective I’ve learned to reach maximum positive results. In psychology, since there isn’t a perfect or non-perfect correlation, we rely solely on the trial and error basis. But again, this uses statistics. 3. What type of mathematics (including statistics) do you think you might need to use in what you are inspired to do after your undergraduate studies are complete (e.g. a career or graduate school)? If you plan on going to graduate school, briefly research what types of classes you’ll need to take to earn your desired degree. If you plan on entering a specific career, use America’s Career Infonet “Occupation Profile” tool to briefly research what skills and duties are common to your career. After having satisfied my cognate math requirement (in PCalculus), I began to see the importance of applying ‘problem solving’ methods more clearly. It’s extremely relevant to any degree. But, I intend to focus on clinical psychology. Theories play an important role. And so does critical thinking and complex problem solving abilities. One way to achieve this method is by practicing the mind and, having an open disposition, of course. The courses I need to hold constant – in graduate school – all rely heavily on theory. And, it will also involve the extreme measures of validating my statements – both orally and written … similar to Statistics.
