I love how those in support of GMO use equate crossbreeding and grafting practices as the same as gene splicing in a laboratory. There are so many many differences between them and not just the cost alone. Crossbreeding and grafting to make hybreds increase diversity, allow many different varieties to exist to adapt to particular conditions. but what Monsanto and a few other big chemical companies are doing is not adding biodiversity but diminishing it. Their seeds create sterile plants. The plants are not make stronger, better as plants, dont have better yields or better nutritional quality, actually quite the opposite and you can see that yourself by doing a little experiment..just switch one item you eat on a regular basis with an organic GMO free one. Do that for a week if you eat it daily, or a month and then go back and eat the brand you used to. Believe me you will be able to tell a huge difference, not just in taste, but in how your body reacts to it, as I have done this experiment myself. There have been others who have done experiments..There is a documentary about 2 men who rented a 1 acre field from a farmer and planted GMO corn seeds on it, took care of it, watched it grow. Then when time came harvested it and followed teh process it went through to be added to the food supply. The found out it was only good for 3 things, creating food additives, made into biofuel (which actually took more energy to create then what you got from the biofuel end product) or as feed for cattle to fatten them up. It was really a very interesting documentary that people should see. Point all being that GMO seeds are not the same as seeds and plants created by crossbreeding and other genetic programs that people have been using for thousands of years. The product those GMO seeds produce is way different and heavily dependent of chemicals, it does nto lessen the cost to farmers at all using these speical GMO seeds. In fact these companies want permission to go back to using the chemical in Agent Orange because the current toxic chemicals used to control weeds is no longer working. GMO seeds have not been in existance that long but already there are signs of health concerns in animals and in people that will only increase over time as these GMO seeds dominate the seed market and the food supply. Many chemicals and substances were approved to be used without any proof that they were safe and were only banned after a very long very hard battle by thousands and thousands of people to get them banned after much harm had been done. Soem known harmful substances are still allowed to be used though their harm is very well documented because of the high profits it yields for the companies who use that substance. Big corporations with lots of money can pay for all kinds of junk science, false studies to make it seem their product is safe. If these things are done by independents who have no tie to the company adn are not relying on that companies funds to invesitgate come up with far different results that can be substantiated by others.
