I love my Eastern Christians friends...I wish the simplicity and humility with which they approach the Scriptures was ours in the West...they read the Bible to know Jesus Christ: Theres not an Orthodox position on the historical question of Noah. Thats more of a 19th century Protestant anxiety. I see the story as of use allegorically and as a type. I personally do not think it is historical. But theres no Orthodox position on such a question--it is--generally--a modern problem. As a Calvinist, youre a modern Christian. I prefer my Christianity a bit older. A lot older. I read the Scriptures for in them I find Christ. St. Peter saw Noah as a type of Baptism. But the equation, either Noah=literal, historical truth or the Bible=useless, is absurd. Such a Bible would require me to be an atheist. Its just a very wrong reading--but there are Orthodox who would argue with me about this. ~Father Stephen Freeman
