I love my job. Indywood just had the great pleasure of hosting the press screening for Big Charity, a film by rising star local filmmakers Alex Glustrom and Ben Johnson. It premieres at the New Orleans Film Fest on Oct 21st and if theres one film you should see at the Fest, IT IS UNEQUIVOCALLY THIS ONE. Heres the trailer: neworleansfilmsociety.org/film/info/2129/big-charity-the-death-of-americas-oldest-hospital The film focuses on the controversy surrounding Charity Hospital in downtown New Orleans and the political process that has arrested its reopening after Katrina. The story is a complex one, nicely captured by the filmmakers. This is a first film, making the high quality production value all the more impressive, but mostly what shines through is the story of this hospital, and the community it has been forced not to serve. Charity was a special place, a place people wear as a badge of honor when they say they are Charity babies. Built in the 1700s, it was the heartbeat of New Orleans, a hospital that treated everyone, no matter socioeconomic status, and was deeply loved by the population as Mama Charity. I dont want to spoil anything, as this is ABSOLUTELY A FILM YOU SHOULD SEE FOR YOURSELF, but Katrina opened an opportunity for the hospital to be rebuilt. The powers that be delayed that rebuilding, and in a classically New Orleans tragedy, resulted in not only the loss of this building, but the loss of healthcare that was truly needed by the New Orleans population. People died. The doors remain shuttered and no one knows where the building will go from here. This is a political film, but it is also a film that speaks to the heart of our City--this is a City whose central hospital used to read Where the unusual occurs and miracles happen. Now we have a shiny alternative. If you care about New Orleans socioeconomic status, healthcare, principles, filmmakers, politics, Katrina, anything, YOU SHOULD SEE THIS FILM. Buy tickets here: neworleansfilmsociety.org/film/info/2129/big-charity-the-death-of-americas-oldest-hospital This is the next big thing in NOLA local film. I cant wait for the talkback at the Fest.
