I love my neighborhood theater, the Magic, a five minute walk from my home. Tonight, I watched Ida, a black and white film set in communist Poland, probably in the 1960s. The story was interesting and plausible, well acted and moving in a quiet way. What blew me away was the framing of the images. Ive been a professional photo dealer for many years and have seen great black and white photographs at museum shows, galleries and trade shows. Watching this film was like going to MOMA to see a major retrospective of Robert Frank images, but set in Poland in the austere setting of the soviet era when life was still reeling from WWII, the Nazi purge of Jews in Poland, and the communist takeover with its own peculiar sense of justice and lack of ambiance. Highly recommended by this Magic fan. imdb/title/tt2718492/
