I love, no I adore and embrace winter! I love long sleeves and hats and gloves and cozy puffy layers and the swish of winter pants and static hair and the pain of hands warming after a freeze and the pure aliveness that is -15 on your face or a pile of snow landing on your head from a tall tree. The watering eyes and foggy sunglasses. The excuse to need different gear for outdoor activities, the unlimited new list of things to do, ways to move the body, feel like a survivor of some sort. The biting wind that makes you hunker a little rushing into a store, the sparkles of frost and snow and crunch of tires on frozen slush. The silence of cars on powder as if they have no engine. The little sideways slide and moment of uh oh. The falling into snow and its cold rushing under your gloves. The need for snowtires and how cool it is that they work. The piles of boots, of wet gloves and hats by the fireplace and wetsock feet from hidden melted snow puddles. I love the hot hot shower on cold skin. I love the art of shoveling a sidewalk for our neighbors to have a nice path to walk on. I love the changes in familiar paths now hidden or more colorful with and without a white blanket, the chunks of ice floating for mile, breaking apart on boulders of ancient lava. The short days that give you more down time more time with family, more time to just be, the excuse for more chili and soup and coffee. The call of the mountains and trails, telling me come on... so many are already out and about.. hurry! Winter is a state of mind. A fascinating season. Enjoy.
